Personally about 50% of the time I feel that Acrobat is a complete pain in the bumkin.
It takes an excessive amount of time to load, and honestly preview seems to handle pdf’s better than Acrobat in most cases. (The exception being, extremely complex files. Preview sometimes has difficulty rendering complex gradients). But, Acrobat does have some advantages.
For instance, Acrobat has preflight features. You can go though the pdf, select options, make separations, and more. Which makes it useful when you are working with pdf files.
PDF, which is short for Portable Document Formant, is a type of file that is as its name suggests is portable. It can be opened on any computer, mac, widows, or linux, as long as it has a reader program installed. The file retains all formatting as it was created, which includes the fonts and even vector shapes.
However, I will mention that back in the day, when I was a pc user, I absolutely abhorred pdfs, they seemed to crash my browser no matter what computer I was on, and they took forever to load, making them less than desirable.
Another feature that Acrobat has, is the ability to comment on the file. You can add flags, highlight sections of text, write in the margins, and then send it to someone else. It reminds me of making notes in the margins of a textbook, or better yet buying a used book and finding that it has all the correct answers written in and all the important information is highlighted.

screen-shot from a pc (because I cant get Acrobat to accept the serial code that it came with,) that demonstrates the sticky note feature.
