The Pros and Cons of Using Free Templates for Your Small Business Website

by | Last updated Jan 7, 2023 | Website Design

As a professional web designer, I’m biased when it comes to free website templates. It is no secret they are NOT my go-to.

But, free templates can the right solution for small businesses on a tight budget that needs a fast and straightforward DIY solution.

However, free and low-cost templates lack the customization and support that come with paid web design services. It’s important to consider all the potential benefits, drawbacks, and risks before deciding which option is best for your business.

The Pros of Free Templates:

The biggest pro of free website templates is the fact that they are absolutely free! (or nearly free) This means businesses with limited funds can save money on web design services and still have an attractive and functional website. Additionally, most free templates require minimal setup time and can be used without any coding knowledge.

  1. They are cost-effective.
  2. They can be set up quickly.
  3. They require no coding knowledge.
  4. They are widely available.
  5. They can often be customized to some extent.

There are many websites where you can find free templates. Most of these sites require just a quick sign-up and can be accessed from any browser. Popular sites include Wix, WordPress, and Squarespace, all of which provide free options for those looking to build a website on a budget. Additionally, more specialized websites, such as TemplateMonster, offer dozens of free website templates for various industries.

The Cons of Free Templates:

Although saving money can be attractive, it’s important to remember that you get what you pay for. Free site templates often have limited customization options which means the site won’t be unique or as on-brand as those created by professionals. Additionally, many free templates lack technical support, so the user must deal with any significant issues or glitches independently. Additionally, knowing who owns the rights to any template can be difficult since many may not come from reliable sources, creating the potential for copyright issues. (This is particularly true with free WordPress templates.)

  1. Limited customization means your site looks like other brands.
  2. Can be difficult to find the right template.
  3. Lack of support from template creators.
  4. Poor design or outdated designs compared to paid support.
  5. Ads for paid versions of the templates on the page.

Many free website templates come with ads for the paid version of the template, which can be distracting and unprofessional. These ads are an eyesore and make it difficult for visitors to your website to tell whether or not you have a professional web presence. Additionally, these ads take away from the overall design of your website, making it look amateurish and cheap. Investing in a custom website design eliminates this distraction and creates a professional and polished online presence.

Rather than a Free template:

If you are able to, there are three main options for creating a website: using a paid template, hiring a web designer, or using a paid site builder. Of these options, hiring a web designer is the best option for creating a long-term, professional online presence. While it is more expensive upfront, you will get a completely custom website that can be tailored to your specific needs. Additionally, web designers can provide ongoing support and maintenance to ensure that your site remains up-to-date and running smoothly.

  1. Consider paid templates: While not Free, paid templates usually offer more customization options and support from the template creators than free options and are still low-cost enough to keep with tight budgets.
  2. Use a paid platform like Squarespace or Wix: These sites blend a template with a builder to offer a simple, drag-and-drop website that can be used to create a professional-looking website without any coding knowledge. These are ideal for DIY business teams.
  3. Hire a web designer: This option will be more expensive than using a template but will provide a completely unique and custom website. Additionally, a quality designer and developer will help manage complex development issues, security concerns, and ownership rights.

Free website templates can be appealing and helpful for small businesses that lack the financial resources to hire a web designer. However, when possible, investing in a custom website created by a professional web designer is the best choice for businesses seeking an effective online presence. A custom website will be tailored to meet all of your needs and provide an engaging user experience. With ongoing support and maintenance, you can ensure that your website is always up-to-date and reflects the professionalism of your organization.
